I recently took a reliance NetConnect CDMA modem Internet connection from a near by reliance web world. I am pretty much satisfied with the connection and speed, considering that this is just dial-up but a high speed dial-up connection. I had to take this since there is no other good providers in my area.
Basically your NetConnect data card's performance depends on signal strength at your place. Take any reliance CDMA phone to the place where you will be using it (like your room). See that it is having full signal inside your room. If it is having full signal, then you can have a very decent surfing speed and download speed of about 14KBps-16KBps (yes.. it is Kilo Bytes) I have full signal (5 bars) in my room and I am quite happy with my connection.
Coming to Net-Connect freedom@night plan, which I have taken, they allow free download from night 10pm to morning 6am. I just tried to download some *** (edited) stuff and I was surprised by the resuls. It had downloaded about 360MB in a night. Theoritically, you can download 420MB in 8 hours if you have a speed of 16KBps.
Remember, it is still very costly to use other than the free usage time slot. It will cost you 50paise/min that is 30Rs/hour in the non-free time period.
So take this only if there is no other good providers in your area and have good CDMA phone signal at your place.
I will post about some hacks in my next post!! Remember to check back.
UPDATE: hack's here

It might be good to use from your home, but it very often sucks when you use it in the peak time or use it while travelling.
Arun,
I have read your review.
Besides signal, it also depends on number of users at a given time, on which you have no control. Also, wireless internet is taken for mobility hence you cant decide based on signal strength at one place.
It does work and once a while it may be good too (Again, it is relative-all you need is checking mail it should be good enough). If mobility is prime concern and usage is mainly during non peak hours and not net intensive, one can consider Reliance...
My review here
Yes, shrinidhi. What you told was right.
Mobile internet service is not at all good in india, as far as any provider is concerned.
As of now, you can use it as a substitute for broadband, where BB is not available from any other service providers. Mine is also a case like that.
Arun,
I think you are one the very few lucky users of Reliance data card. I have been using this connection since last one & half year, but never experienced moderate/acceptable speed. I also disagree with Shrinidhi's comment that corporate users get better speed. I am a corporate user, who are using more than 100 connections. I have vast experience of using this connection at various place in India. I am very much dissatisfied.
Samir,
I am very sorry to hear from you that you are not even able to get a moderate speed... Anyway, see my post about hacks to improve the connection speed...Hope it will be of some help to you!!
I reached here a bit late. I baught Netconnect modem 2 days ago. Immediately after my first connection I realised that I'm cheated. I'm getting no more than 24kbps (which is 3KB/s). This is pathetic man. To hell with their world class infrastructure.
RECOMENDATION
Don't buy Netconnect USB modem from reliance. It is worthless. Only as good as VSNL dial-up service in 1995.
Vijay
I bought a Reliance Modem in December! The speeds were pathetic! Wouldn't cross 10KB/s! Worst of all, if you try to cancel the plan, they won't even buy back or provide any sort of resale options for the modem you bought! Your basically expected to dispose it or do whatever you want to do with it! Reliance honestly sucks! And i totally support Amit Ji's stand...Don't buy Reliance!
I bought a reliance connection back in December of 2007. The speeds it provided were pathetic even at 5 sticks! I barely crossed 11KB/s! Worst of all...if you try to cancel your connection Reliance doesn't provide an option to either buy back or even provide a second hand retail option for the modems bought! On the contrary you are expected to simply dispose it off! I totally support Amit's view..Don't ever buy Reliance Connections especially NetConnect! It sucks!

For you people who do not understand the speed 256 KBPS. i know something about OSI reference layers that when you go up from the bottom layer to application layer (where your browser works on TCP/IP and says 1.0kbps... and so on- 23kbps..) the content is drastically reduced because of the padding frames inserted to provide error free are getting deleted. The above case is only for a normal connection for wireless adapter the scenario is even worse. More padding is used physical layer wireless networks . if you get a speed of 23kpbs in app.layer then it is normal. if you don't get that there is a way of obtaining the speed (Not illegal but unattempted by others due to complexity). But if i say openly many others will try and even i will eventually end up with slow speed.
i am living in chennai so other city users can mail me but only first 30 users .
Yoga! how can we contact you? Give us some mail id..
hiii! frens..i hav seen ur comments down here..why dont we all hack reliance network lolz...thr might b few progmans, netwrk admins over here..n im surprised some one is talking abt OSI layer tech..n all..Then y dont u all ppl think of too hack using few networking tools...Get the information of reliance servers located ..get the information of adminstrators of reliance...n lets fight with the help of virus's..

RELIANCE Data Card SUCKS!! SUCKS BIGTIME!! The coverage is pathetic, the speed is very low, called their customer care to disconnect they asked me to go to reliance world and do it.went there for termination, paid all my outstanding dues they still tortured me for 3 days saying they cannot do it from hyderabad and need to contact their head office, had to visit them 3 times before they finally said they canceled my connection, but even after 45 days i keep getting SMS and email of current month bills. Stay Away guys cost me Rs.3300 and dint even use it for a week.
Worst of all is their cancelation department. I have stopped using my netconnect datacard since beginning of this year and have cleared all outstanding bills. Still the bill continues to fry.
I’m a new reader and have been very impressed with your recent post and thought to drop a friendly note. It is really great information related to reliance data card. Waiting for more posts, is there a way to subscribe to your blog via email?
